Daryl Dike was among the West Brom players to send a personal message to Matt Phillips following confirmation of the winger’s exit from The Hawthorns.
Phillips took to Instagram on Tuesday (21 May) to thank Albion fans for their support over his eight-year stay at The Hawthorns.
The versatile wide player is one of a number of West Brom players out of contract this summer and it is now known he will not be staying on.
Dike replied to the message with a one-word response – “Legend” – along with a crying face emoji while Alex Mowatt and Conor Townsend both said: “What a guy.”
Alex Palmer posted: “Some guy!”, accompanied by blue and white love heart emojis.
West Brom clearout begins
Given the high number of players out of contract next month, it is expected to be a busy summer of activity at The Hawthorns.
While it is never easy saying goodbye to a player who has given so many years of service, it will do Albion no harm to freshen up.
The big question, of course, is how much money will the Baggies have to spend this summer now that Shilen Patel has his feet under the table.
Losing someone like Phillips is all well and good if he can replaced, but that is easier said than done.
As a reminder, Carlos Corberan used Phillips 26 times in the Championship last season – 19 of those starts – despite his injury issues.
Ultimately, those injury issues have held Phillips back somewhat. Hopefully for the long-serving favourite, though, he can enjoy a successful finale to his career elsewhere.
