Georgia coach Kirby Smart takes a hilarious jab at former Heisman winner

Kirby Smart is never afraid to speak his mind. He’s one of the last coaches in sports to deliver engaging mid-game interviews due to his lack of a filter.
During his appearance at the Nike Coach of the Year clinic, Smart gave a presentation featuring four previous Heisman winners, including Texas A&M superstar Johnny Manziel. When someone called the former Aggie a champion, Smart took a hilarious jab at the NFL flameout.
“Manziel ain’t no champion,” Smart said. “A champion of what? Champion of fireball?”
It was a quick, light-hearted barb, and Smart quickly praised Manziel for his success against the 49-year-old’s legendary defenses.
In Manziel’s two games against Smart, he tossed for seven touchdowns compared to just two interceptions and tallied over 180 total yards on the ground. At the peak of “Johnny Football,” the budding phenom walked into Tuscaloosa and stunned the Tide with a dramatic wire-to-wire victory.
Smart might’ve won the rematch the following season in College Station, but his defense allowed 42 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter alone. Even with the two splitting the all-time series, it’s obvious who had the upper hand in the showdowns.
Manziel currently does media work, and last played professional football in 2022. His career might’ve been cut short due to constant partying and a failure to work on his craft, but his lasting impact cannot be understated. He’ll be a college football Hall of Famer and go down as one of the top signal-callers of the 21st century. Even now, he’s likely a source of some of Smart’s nightmares.
