Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy lobbying for former University of Texas teammate to join him in Kansas City via the 2025 NFL draft.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy is lobbying for a former teammate at the University of Texas to join him in Kansas City via the 2025 NFL draft.

Worthy took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his choice for the Chiefs in the first round, just ahead of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. His choice should come as no surprise.

“Jahdae Barron to the Chiefs,” Worthy wrote on X.

This isn’t the first time Worthy has shown love to his former University of Texas teammate since he joined the NFL. Ahead of their Dec. 9 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Worthy wore a shirt during warm-ups to support his former teammates’ bid for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors college football’s best defensive back. Barron, of course, was the Thorpe winner in 2024.

Could Jahdae Barron be the Chiefs’ pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft?

The fifth-year senior is listed at 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds and has been one of college football’s most consistent players over the past several seasons. He recorded 226 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, two sacks, eight interceptions, 24 passes defended, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and two defensive touchdowns in his career at Texas. His versatility, instincts, and tackling ability make him one of the top prospects in the defensive secondary in this draft class.

Regarding need, the Chiefs don’t have a glaring need at the cornerback position for the 2025 NFL season. Still, they’ve got a trio of players slated to become free agents in 2026: Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, and Joshua Williams. Getting ahead of that future problem could be something that Brett Veach seeks to address.

Worthy will likely have to do more lobbying directly to Chiefs GM Brett Veach, as there may be a need for a slight trade-up to secure Barron in the first round. The A to Z Sports NFL mock draft database has Barron’s earliest selection at pick No. 16 in the first round, with his median selection coming at pick No. 35.
