Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer makes laughable suggestion on NIL’s effect on Crimson Tide’s recruiting

It’s still the top of the first inning in the NIL college landscape, and it’s impossible to predict just how crazy the sport is about to get. It’s often referred to as the Wild Wild West because of the lack of legislation around player recruitment and movement.

The sport’s most prominent brands, like Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Texas, have found immediate success under this format—but Alabama’s lagged behind, and head coach Kalen DeBoer has taken notice.

DeBoer finished 9-4 in his first season with the Tide and missed the 12-team College Football Playoff. This stunning lack of success is enough to immediately turn his seat warm in Tuscaloosa, but how much of the shortcomings were his fault?

In an interview with On3’s Pete Nakos, DeBoer shared his opinion that revenue sharing would put Alabama on a “balanced playing field” and rejuvenate the program.

“Having a more balanced playing field helps our situation,” DeBoer said. “It allows us to get where it was at one point just a few years back. Where recruiting is real recruiting, not just someone who’s gonna put in the highest bid.”

There’s something inherently comical about the leader of the perennial blueblood complaining about an imbalance of power. Does DeBoer think anyone will buy this pathetic attempt at an excuse?

DeBoer is 113-16 as a head coach and isn’t used to any type of adversity. He’s a schematical genius, and with the talent at his disposal, it should be impossible for him to fail long-term.

The only thing that could get in his way is these nonsensical mental gymnastics to try to justify his squad’s flaws.

It’s ok to admit to having growing pains.
