South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball: SEC Tournament first matchup set

The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team is gearing up to play Vanderbilt in the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Vanderbilt advanced after a 40-point first-round loss by Texas A&M to Tennessee earlier on Thursday. The Gamecocks previously defeated Vanderbilt in the regular season, 82-54.
South Carolina has undoubtedly faced some challenges in the regular season, but Dawn Staley and the team are ready to make some improvements to stay on top throughout the tournament.
“This is by far the toughest tournament we’ve entered. What do we need to do to win? We’ve got depth—you need depth in this tournament. You need to take care of the basketball, rebound, and take good shots. We have to be disciplined, and other teams do as well, to make it through this tournament and get to Sunday,” Staley said.
That being said, head coach Dawn Staley is no stranger to the SEC Tournament in recent years. She has led the Gamecocks to eight championships, with titles in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024.
As they head into the 2025 SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, sophomore guard MiLaysia Fulwiley is expected to play a pivotal role, building on her previous MVP performance.
South Carolina will take the court on Friday at 12:00 PM ET. A win would set up a matchup against the winner of Kentucky’s third-round game. The tournament is being held at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, with games broadcast on SEC Network, ESPN, and FuboTV.
