Last week, the Louisville Police Department announced it would not be dropping charges against golfer Scottie Scheffler.
Now, a new report from WDRB says Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell plans to address Scheffler’s charges publicly Wednesday afternoon, which signals the matter is “likely to be dismissed.”
O’Connell’s news conference is set for 1 p.m. ET tomorrow at the Hall of Justice in Louisville. Scheffler’s lawyer Steve Romines is set to hold his own media session at 1:30 p.m.
As of now, Scheffler is still scheduled for arraignment on June 3. The world-ranked No. 1 golfer is facing four charges: felony second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.
Scheffler was arrested on Friday, May 17 while attempting to enter Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the PGA Championship. Traffic was stopped due to a pedestrian fatality, and police say Scheffler did not obey orders to stop his car, accusing him of “dragging” Det. Bryan Gillis as he continued to drive toward the club.
Scheffler has called the matter a “big misunderstanding,” while Romines has been adamant that his client did nothing wrong, saying he has “no interest in settling” the case.
Gillis, the arresting officer, has been disciplined by Louisville PD for failing to have his body camera on during the incident.
