Top 25 results: BYU gets a huge bump in new AP Poll rankings

On an eight-game heater, BYU basketball is understandably gathering plenty of national attention as this Kevin Young-led boulder steamrolls the Big 12 Conference field for four straight weeks. At the release of the newest AP Top 25, the Cougars are sitting pretty in the greater landscape of college hoops.
The second-longest win streak in the Big 12 conference, BYU is leading the way for teams peaking at the right moment — it seems the “Underwhelmers Anonymous” 12-step program at the midpoint of the season really helped kick these Cougars into high gear, and the entire country is on watch.
After only jumping two spots in the AP Top 25 poll last week (25 to 23), BYU saw an opportunity to make some magic in the Hilton Coliseum against tenth-ranked Iowa State and didn’t blink. Taking down the Cyclones in a slobber-knocking double-overtime clash, BYU did what it took to survive and advance (a useful skill for single-elimination tournaments).
This week, back-to-back wins over one of basketball’s toughest squads and an in-state rival, Utah, have shot the Cougars up the ladder.

Reaching the 17th spot in the poll, BYU basketball is poised for a continued ascent right as the Big 12 conference tournament opens. If these Cougars in motion can stay in motion, their inertia may carry them to a memorable postseason.
Just in time for March Madness, BYU basketball has cemented itself as a serious contender for a Sweet 16 run, and may just be a candidate to join the Elite Eight and beyond. Who knows what can happen when the ball tips at the onset of March Madness?
Don’t look down, Cougs. Just keep on climbing.
