O’Neill Sends Strong Message as Celtic Face McGregor Exit Fear

Martin O’Neill has weighed in on growing transfer talk surrounding Callum McGregor, insisting Celtic F.C. should be doing everything possible to keep their captain amid interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Speculation has been building for months, especially after Brendan Rodgers moved on to take charge of Al Qadsiah. Since then, reports have repeatedly linked McGregor with a potential switch to the Middle East. While nothing materialised during the January window, fresh rumours suggest a move could resurface at the end of the season.

O’Neill, however, made his position clear. He believes McGregor remains central to everything Celtic do, both on and off the pitch. The former boss highlighted the midfielder’s leadership, influence in the dressing room, and ability to control games as key reasons why the club should hold onto him.

He also pointed to McGregor’s loyalty over the years, noting that the midfielder has likely had chances to leave for bigger financial offers in the past but chose to stay. For O’Neill, that commitment — combined with his quality — makes him invaluable.

Looking ahead, Celtic face a pivotal summer with changes expected, including a new managerial appointment and a likely squad reshuffle. Despite that, the priority, according to O’Neill’s view, should be keeping their captain at the heart of the team.

There’s no denying McGregor has faced criticism at times this season, particularly with the heavy workload he’s carried. At points, fatigue has shown, but his importance hasn’t diminished. Rather than moving him on, the smarter approach would be to ease the burden — bringing in support so he isn’t required to play every minute.

Names like Miguel Chaiwa have been mentioned as possible additions who could share responsibilities in midfield.

For now, the situation remains unresolved. But if Celtic have their way, McGregor will still be leading the side next season, armband firmly in place.
