Former Vancouver Canucks forward Nic Petan is leaving North America after nine seasons.
After spending nine years between the National Hockey League and AHL, former Vancouver Canucks forward Nic Petan is set to embark on a new adventure overseas for the 2024-25 campaign.
On Monday, KHL club AK Bars Kazan announced they’ve agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent forward Nic Petan.
“Ak Bars has added 29-year-old forward Nic Petan to its roster; the contract with the newcomer runs until the end of the 2024/25 season.”
In AK Bars Kazan’s press release, Petan commented on the decision to leave North America and sign in the KHL, saying that it wasn’t easy, but he’s looking forward to getting started with the team and has heard nothing but great things about the organization and league.
“The decision to change my career path and move to the KHL after nine years in the AHL and NHL was not easy, but I am looking forward to the start of the season because I see great prospects in our team. From my friends and acquaintances who played in Russia, I have heard only good things about the level of hockey and the conditions in the cities.” Petan said.
He added, “I am glad that I will play for one of the best clubs in the League. I had multiple other options, but I considered Kazan the best choice. I have heard only good things about Ak Bars, I know how the club treats hockey players, how the fans support the players. A long time ago, we played on the same team with Alexander Burmistrov; he told me a lot about his hometown and said I would be thrilled with the transfer.”
The Delta, British Columbia native appeared in 170 games in the NHL with Winnipeg, Toronto, Vancouver and Minnesota between 2015-16 and 2023-24. During his time with the Vancouver Canucks in 2021-22, Petan had two assists and four penalty minutes in 18 games. Meanwhile, in the AHL with Abbotsford that season, Petan put up 44 points (12 goals, 32 assists).
