8 of the craziest Wisconsin stats from their huge victory over Purdue
In the toppling of the No. 7 Purdue Boilermakers, the No. 17 Wisconsin Badgers amassed some impressive stats, metrics, and other fun oddities. There are eight such examples on this list. None of them have to do with the Kamari McGee bogus ejection, Greg Gard’s candidacy for Coach of the Year, or even John Tonje’s case for Big Ten Player of the Year. However, the latter two arguments can use some of these stats as needed. Let’s dive in:
1. Wisconsin’s offense destroyed Purdue’s top 30 defense
Purdue had a defensive rating of 28th before the game started, according to KenPom, and ended at 40. By the end of the Saturday slates of games, Purdue finished at 41st in defensive rating. If you are curious, Wisconsin is now the 6th best offensive team in the country, according to KenPom.
2. Wisconsin did something it has never done AT Purdue
Teams don’t just waltz into Mackey and put up 90 points but Wisconsin did. They not only put up 94 but they had 58 points in the second half alone. Absolutely insane level of scoring in a hostile environment.
3. John Tonje did something no other player has done this season
There are plenty of players that have posted 30-point days, but according to Wisconsin media release, John Tonje is the first to do it against two top-10 opponents. He put up 41 points against No. 9 Arizona earlier in the season.
4. Wisconsin set a new mark for top-10 teams played on the road
Just when you thought we were done with the 94 points scored oddities, nope. Wisconsin has never scored this many points in a top-10 game in an away game. That’s a big deal.
5. Wisconsin did something no other D-1 team has done in 15 seasons!
You may need to read that last sentence again from the above tweet. In 15 seasons, no other team has shot 60% and committed less than 3 turnovers on the road. This isn’t even qualified by a top 10 team. Any team.
6. These stats are insane that Dave Revsine posted
7. Wisconsin stifled arguably the best point guard in the Big Ten, Braden Smith
If you are curious, Braden Smith played 40 minutes went 2-10 from the field, 0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line, had 5 rebounds, 12 assists, 1 turnover, and six points. The assists were coming regardless, but UW stopped his ability to score.
8. Wisconsin social media team compares Tonje and Johnny Davis
This is high praise from the official account for John Tonje, but the similarity of taking it to Purdue is too similar not to notice. On Wisconsin!
