Falcons Fans Not Happy About Kyle Pitts’ Latest Admission
Kyle Pitts drew the ire of more than a few Atlanta Falcons fans for nearly costing Michael Penix Jr. an irreplaceable piece of game memorabilia.
Pitts caught Penix’s first-ever NFL touchdown pass during the Falcons’ loss on Sunday against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium. The play tied the game at 24-24 with just over a minute left to eventually send the game into overtime.
The TD catch ended Pitts’ drought of seven games without finding the end zone. The fourth-year tight end was so fired up after making the play that he launched the ball straight into the air.
Pitts admitted to reporters on Wednesday that he completely blanked on the significance of the moment.
“I didn’t know that was his first one,” said Pitts. “I thought he threw it last week, or the week prior. … We definitely had to track that down. I was pretty upset I didn’t know, but we got it back for him.”
Penix’s other teammates were able to remedy the situation.
Wide receiver Drake London was able to deliver Penix the football as the teams were walking off the field. But that did not stop Falcons fans from blasting Pitts for not realizing what the moment meant for Penix.
“listen to [Bijan Robinson] and [Drake London] all last week saying how they wanted that touchdown for [Michael Penix Jr.] so bad in that 1st game and they’re gonna get one for him this week and then there’s [Kyle Pitts] completely checked out….,” said one Falcons fan.
“Everyone in Atlanta knew that was Penix’s first TD,” replied another.
“How could he not know that was his first touchdown pass lol,” said a different fan.
One fan even brought up that Pitts cost Penix a great chance at his first touchdown a week prior against the New York Giants. Pitts bobbled a dart from Penix just a few yards shy of the end zone with the Falcons facing third-and-2 at the Giants’ 7-yard line.
Instead of Penix getting a fresh set of downs to throw his first NFL touchdown, Pitts served up Penix’s first career interception on a silver platter.
“You turned his first td into an interception the week prior!” the fan said to Pitts. “You really do just work here!”
Falcons fans were saying all these things to Pitts despite the TD ball eventually being recovered. One can just imagine how they would have reacted if Penix’s first touchdown ball had gotten lost in a sea of Commanders fans.
It’s clear that Falcons fans no longer feel the same way about Pitts compared to when Atlanta drafted him fourth overall in 2021.
Pitts was once seen as the team’s tight end of the future. But after four years with the team, Pitts has yet to prove himself worthy of his high draft slot.
Through 16 games this season, Pitts has tallied just 45 catches for 587 yards and four total touchdowns.
