Arkansas baseball’s Zach Root earns SEC pitcher of the week award

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas left-hander Zach Root earned an SEC pitcher of the week award Monday following a 7 2/3-inning gem at Vanderbilt in his last start.

Root did not allow a run on 3 hits and 3 walks, and struck out 7 during his 100-pitch start against the Commodores last Friday at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn. The Razorbacks won 9-0 as part of a series sweep over Vanderbilt.

“The guy pitched great, and he was upset that he had to come out of the game without getting that third out there in the eighth, but pitch count hit 100,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. “It’s a long season and it worked out.”

Root took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of his start against the Commodores and became the first Arkansas pitcher since Connor Noland at the 2022 College World Series to have back-to-back starts of at least 7 innings.
