Todd Golden reacts to Florida’s comeback win for national championship: ‘We stayed the course’

At the age of 39, Todd Golden is a national champion coach.

In his third season, Golden guided Florida to a 36-4 record, culminating with a win in the national championship game over Houston. It is the 3rd national title in Florida basketball history.

UF’s NCAA Tournament run was no cakewalk. To reach the championship game, the Gators had to come back against UConn, Texas Tech and Auburn. Monday night was no different.

Houston led by just 3 points at the half, 31-28. The Cougars then started hot in the 2nd half and widened their lead. At the 16:24 mark, it was 42-30 in Houston’s favor. Once again, the Gators managed to erase the deficit and come out on top.

Golden said it was nothing new.

“We did what we did all year. We stayed the course,” Golden said in his postgame interview. “We had the best backcourt in America. I think we had the best frontcourt in America. And like we’ve done all year, we made plays when we needed them most. We guarded our butts off down the stretch, made every 50-50 winning play.”

After giving a brief summary of what his team did, Golden could not hold in his excitement any longer.

“The Gators are (national championships), baby! We got the natty, baby! Let’s go!”

The party is on for Golden’s Gators in Gainesville.
