Kalen DeBoer Responds to Backlash on His Sideline Demeanor
As Alabama begins year two under head coach Kalen DeBoer, early observations suggest a notable shift- not in scheme or talent, but in sideline presence.
Known for his success at Washington, DeBoer has brought a composed, focused demeanor to Tuscaloosa. While some coaches are animated throughout the game, DeBoer maintains a quieter, more deliberate presence. It’s a calculated choice that reflects his leadership style and philosophy on preparation.
“If there’s anyone I’m yelling at, it’s internally at myself,” DeBoer said. “Maybe the week of prep is different. But on Saturdays, we’re in the fight together. I learned way back not to overreact and keep guys focused.”
DeBoer’s resume supports his approach. In two seasons at Washington, he posted a 25-3 record, including a 14-1 campaign in 2023 that led to an appearance in the national championship game. Although year one in Tuscaloosa didn’t go as planned as the Crimson Tide finished just 9-4, DeBoer is trusting the things that got him to where he is now.
Alabama is in the midst of a quarterback battle that could define DeBoer’s tenure. Fifth-year quarterback Ty Simpson is seen as the clear favorite to win the job, but five-star freshman Keelon Russell and redshirt sophomore Austin Mack are doing their best to push the veteran.
DeBoer’s approach contrasts with the sideline intensity often associated with his predecessor, Nick Saban. While the standards at Alabama remain high, the demeanor guiding them appears to be evolving.
With spring practice coming to a close on Saturday with A-Day, DeBoer’s calm command is quickly becoming a defining feature of Alabama’s new era.
