Oklahoma Sooners officially submit an offer to defensive stud ahead of 2025 offseason

The Oklahoma Sooners have some of the best recruiters on their staff right now. They may have had a rough last few years, but the recruiting is staying strong considering everything that has happened around the program.

Todd Bates is one of the biggest reasons why outside of Brent Venables, the defense gets the players they do. He currently serves as the Associate Head Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator, and Defensive Tackles coach for OU. He joined the Sooners’ staff in January 2022, following a successful stint at Clemson where he worked under Brent Venables from 2017 to 2021.

Bates has a reputation for being an elite recruiter, earning the Rivals Recruiter of the Year award in 2019 while at Clemson. His coaching has been instrumental in developing some of the nation’s top defensive linemen, including NFL draft picks like Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, and Clelin Ferrell.

And, he recently submitted an offer to a defensive stud just ahead of the 2025 offseason.

Corey Wells receives an offer from Oklahoma

On Sunday, Corey Wells, a 2026 recruit, posted on Twitter that he had gotten an offer from Bates and Oklahoma.

Wells is a 2026 recruit from Petal High School in Mississippi. He’s a 6’5″, 290-pound defensive tackle who played primarily nose guard last season. There isn’t really much info about him out there, but if Bates is handing him an offer, he has to be good, or at least see something in him.

It will be interesting to see where he develops.
