Oklahoma Sooners starter isn’t afraid of anything coming his way for the 2025 season

The Oklahoma Sooners are in a position right now where they can come into 2025 and have a player who has significant odds to win the Heisman Trophy. That player is, of course, John Mateer, who was one of the best quarterbacks in all of college football last season, but wasn’t under the spotlight as often, as he was at Washington State, a much smaller football program than OU.

But, with that, they also have a true freshman in 2024, who’s heading into 2025 having shown that he is going to one day be a really good football player. We saw that in the Navy game as well, despite the loss. Michael Hawkins has it, and it’s just a matter of time before he becomes a starter and shows the world how good he is.

But, it’s obvious that Mateer is the guy for now. New offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle basically brought him over from Washington State. Despite that connection, Hawkins is not backing down from anything.

“Yeah It’s a great opportunity for everyone, bring a guy in, and I think we needed a guy in the room,” Hawkins said after the loss to Navy. “I think the biggest thing is just getting the offense down as quickly as you can together, getting the chemistry down, and building Team 131 as an unbelievable team. John Mateer is a great guy I talked to him at breakfast.”

You love that attitude, and you love that he is welcoming the competition, especially knowing that he is at a disadvantage, because Mateer is Arbuckle’s guy, and yet, he is still so confident in himself that he stayed at Oklahoma rather than transfer out.

Now, we can all assume that Mateer is going to be the starter in 2025. But, watching this quarterback battle during the offseason is going to be super fun. Hawkins isn’t scared.
