The Kentucky Wildcats have been an impressive team this season under first-year head coach Mark Pope—when they are healthy. The Wildcats have earned significant wins over teams like Florida, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, and Tennessee twice. However, lately, they have been plagued by injuries, particularly at the point guard position.
This has led to losses against Ole Miss, Texas, and Alabama. With the SEC being as strong as ever from top to bottom, this is not the season to be hit by the injury bug. With just over a week left in the regular season, the SEC has 11 teams firmly in contention for the March Madness Tournament.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats traveled to Oklahoma. While the Sooners have struggled in conference play, any road game is a formidable challenge. Kentucky managed to pull out a victory in the final seconds when Otega Oweh made a banked shot from the restricted area. Oweh has been one of the Wildcats’ most reliable players, and he delivered once again.
As Kentucky celebrated their win and headed back to the locker room, a beer can was thrown at the team, narrowly missing Brandon Garrison’s head. Thankfully, no players were harmed as the can did not connect with anyone. However, the situation could have been much worse had it struck a player.
The beer throw could have been sparked by the tense conclusion to the game. Once the final buzzer sounded, players from both teams could be seen exchanging words. Regardless of the situation, there is no excuse for fans to behave in such a manner at any sporting event. Had an injury occurred, this entire situation could have had a much more serious outcome.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats will face a challenging task on Saturday as they host No. 1 Auburn at Rupp Arena.
