Virginia Tech Star Delivers Best Quote Of College Basketball Season After Loss In ACC Tournament

Virginia Tech basketball has had more valleys than peaks in its history. While better known for their football prowess, the Hokies made the Sweet Sixteen in 2019 and had five straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2017 to 2022, although March Madness was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

However, Virginia Tech is in the midst of a lean period following a 13-19 season that ended on Tuesday with the Hokies’ 82-73 loss to the California Golden Bears in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

In reflecting on the Hokies’ frustrating season, 6-foot-8, 215-pound junior forward Tobi Lawal, who completed his first year in Blacksburg and ended up as the team’s leading scorer after transferring from VCU, shared his candid and hilarious thoughts.

“(I’m proud of) My team, I’m proud of how far we came. What did they have us in the preseason? Maybe 14th or 15th?

“They thought we were going to be (expletive). I mean, we were still (expletive), but you know, we weren’t that bad. You know what I’m saying? We beat expectations.”

Lawal, who originally is from London, England, joined the Hokies this past offseason after two seasons playing with the VCU Rams. The power forward averaged a career-best season, starting all 30 games that he played for the Hokies and averaging 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
