Quotes of Note: No. 1 Auburn basketball dominates Oklahoma on the Plains

The Auburn basketball team got a major win on their home turf this week. The top-ranked Tigers dominated Oklahoma in the 98-70, putting on a show on defense and holding the lead for the length of the game. Auburn continues their season undefeated in conference play.

Johni Broome and Chad Baker-Mazara led the charge with 15 points apiece even though Baker-Mazara fouled out a little over halfway through the second half. Both Denver Jones and Chaney Johnson contributed 13 points and Tahaad Pettiford racked up 11.

Dylan Cardwell was a major factor on the Tigers’ defense with six blocks, and Broome logged three additional blocks. It was a big defensive game for Auburn basketball, and they improve to a 21-1 record after the victory. Here is what the team had to say about the big win.

Chris Moore on the Tigers’ shutting down Oklahoma’s offense, per Auburn Rivals:

“Man, just sticking with our principles. We know what we do can really disrupt anyone in the country. As long as we stick to our principles, the game plan will carry it out.”

Bruce Pearl on Broome’s low-scoring numbers in the second half, per Auburn Undercover:

“You know, there’s just so much contact in there. And so, you gotta decide what’s a high percentage shot, what’s not a high percentage shot. And so, open shots are higher percentage shots, and sometimes inside physically contested shots. And so, he was just kind of taking a beating in there. And with his ankle, we got him out with about five or six minutes, six or seven minutes up to go in the game, he typically would have stayed out there a little longer, but I just didn’t want him to get hurt.”

Denver Jones on the Tigers’ defense, per Auburn Rivals:

“Honestly, the way we play defense, it’s a lot of trust and a lot of communicating. It’s just trusting your brother, that he’s got your back. If I get beat on a drive, I trust that Dylan is gonna come in there and block it off the glass. It’s that way for everyone. That’s what makes us great on defense.”

The Tigers return to action this Saturday when they host No. 6 Florida in Neville Arena.
